Troops Capture Alleged Terrorists and Seize Arms in Benue

A military operation in Benue State led to the arrest of three individuals suspected of terrorism along with the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and munitions. This was part of a proactive measure ahead of the wet season.

Troops from Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) apprehended three individuals suspected of terrorism and seized an AK-47 rifle with ammunition during a pre- rainy season clearance operation in the Agasha area of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State.

Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the spokesperson for OPWS, confirmed the operation took place on March 26, 2026. It was executed by troops from the COAS Intervention Battalion XI and followed reliable intelligence regarding the suspected criminal activity in the region.

According to Zubairu, the troops advanced carefully, securing the area before capturing the suspects. The arrested suspects have been identified as Sule Ibrahim and Salmanu Risko from Nasarawa State, alongside Abdulkareem Haruna from Jos, Plateau State.

The items confiscated from the detainees include one AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and 27 rounds of 7.62mm x 39 ammunition.

Additionally, personal belongings such as a Tecno mobile phone, a cutlass, ten sachets of alcohol, and various charms were recovered during the operation.

The suspects are currently being held in military custody as investigations commence, with plans for subsequent prosecution. Zubairu noted that this operation is part of ongoing efforts to enhance security in farming communities ahead of the wet season. Troops are maintaining an aggressive stance to impede criminal activities throughout the state.

In related remarks, the Force Commander of the Joint Task Force OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, praised the soldiers for their commitment and professionalism in protecting lives and property within the operational area.
