Trump Asserts Iran Has Experienced 'Regime Change' During Ongoing Conflict

US President Donald Trump has announced that the ongoing conflict involving US and Israeli military operations has resulted in a regime change in Iran, following a series of attacks that have eliminated numerous high-ranking leaders within the country's military structure.

During a conversation with journalists on Air Force One on Sunday, March 29, Trump made these remarks, asserting that the war against Iran is progressing swiftly. He indicated that the United States is now negotiating with a “completely different set of people” who are showing signs of reasonableness, suggesting the possibility of reaching an agreement with Tehran in the near future.

Regarding the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump commented that while he may still be alive, he has been gravely injured.

"The previous regime has been decimated and largely destroyed. The current leadership is mostly eliminated. We are now interacting with a different group than has ever been encountered before. Therefore, I consider this a regime change. In fact, the new group has been quite reasonable. Thus, in my view, we have enacted regime change. The first regime was notably malevolent, and that has been dealt with. The second phases of leadership have also been removed, presenting a unique opportunity for a deal," Trump stated.

He further expressed optimism about the possibility of a coming agreement, saying, "I believe we will strike an agreement with them soon, but we have accomplished a significant regime change."

Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father, the former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, was appointed as the third supreme leader of Iran after his father's death in an airstrike conducted on February 28.

Since the beginning of the military operations, Iran has reportedly closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which approximately 20 percent of global oil and gas shipments are transited.

This closure has resulted in a significant surge in global oil prices, but Trump has reassured that relief is forthcoming, primarily through concessions made by Iran. He noted that several tankers are expected to pass through the Strait very soon.

"Out of a sign of goodwill, they have allowed 20 large oil tankers to transit through the Strait of Hormuz," Trump highlighted, stating that these shipments are scheduled to commence shortly, over the next few days.
