In a statement made to Reuters, President Donald Trump indicated that it is Ukraine, rather than Russia, which is obstructing the possibility of a peace deal in the ongoing conflict. This comment marks a departure from what European allies have suggested regarding Moscow's reluctance to cease hostilities.
During an exclusive interview in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump expressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to end his nearly four-year military campaign in Ukraine, whereas the Ukrainian leadership has shown more reluctance.
"I believe he’s prepared to make a deal," Trump commented regarding Putin. "I think Ukraine is not as ready to conclude a deal."
When queried on the reasons behind the lack of resolution in negotiations regarding Europe’s most significant land conflict since World War II, Trump offered a succinct answer: "Zelensky."
These comments reflect Trump's growing frustration with the Ukrainian president. The two leaders have experienced a fluctuating relationship, though it appears their interactions have become more amicable since Trump's return to office during the previous year.
At times, Trump has shown a greater willingness to trust Putin's commitments than some of his US allies, leading to frustration among Kyiv, European capitals, and certain US lawmakers, including members of his own Republican Party.
After some initial hesitations, US-driven discussions have recently centered around security commitments for Ukraine post-conflict, attempting to ensure that Russia would not initiate another invasion following any potential peace agreement. Negotiators have urged Kyiv to contemplate relinquishing control over parts of the eastern Donbas region as part of any settlement.
Trump further commented to Reuters that he was unaware of any imminent trip to Moscow planned by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as previously reported by Bloomberg.
When asked if he would consider meeting with Zelensky at the World Economic Forum in Davos the following week, Trump affirmed that he would be open to it, assuming the Ukrainian president was present: "I would – if he’s there. I'm going to be there."
Addressing the reasons behind Zelensky's hesitancy in negotiations, Trump did not provide specifics but noted: "I just think he’s having a hard time getting there."
Zelensky has publicly dismissed the prospect of making any territorial concessions to Russia, asserting that according to Ukraine’s constitution, the nation is unable to forfeit any land.
