President Donald Trump has taken down a controversial video he shared that depicted former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in a derogatory manner.
On Friday, Trump had posted a video on his Truth Social account showing the Obamas as apes. This portrayal immediately ignited outrage across the globe, inciting many to urge the President to remove it.
In response to the backlash, the video was removed just hours after it was published.
Initially, the White House defended the post but later retracted by attributing the content to an unnamed staff member, asserting that the inappropriate video was indeed taken down.
Before its removal, Tim Scott, the only Black Republican senator, characterized the post as racist, expressing his hope that it was a fabrication and demanding its withdrawal. He remarked on social media, "Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House. The President should remove it."
Reports from CNN indicated that some Republican lawmakers contacted Trump directly to address the racially charged video.
The swift removal of the video highlights the sensitivity around issues of race and representation, especially in the political sphere.
