The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under the leadership of Taminu Turaki, has asserted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not in a position to orchestrate the party's leadership.
Ini Ememobong, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made these remarks in response to INEC's recent quarterly consultative gathering with political factions, which included the National Caretaker Committee led by Abdulraman Mohammed.
"We are aware that the Independent National Electoral Commission has invited the leaders of political parties to a meeting.
"It has also come to our attention that INEC extended invitations to certain former members of our party who are claiming affiliation with a purported National Caretaker Committee, representing our party, even though this is not supported by our constitution.
"Such actions, although understandably provocative and potentially disruptive, will elicit a thorough legal rebuttal.
"While this behavior is not unexpected from the current leadership of INEC, we believe that a neutral mediator should recognize the existence of pending cases before the Court of Appeal.
"This includes the ruling that they are currently referencing, which will significantly impact the ongoing matter; thus, they should have exercised caution.
"We assure our members that INEC does not have the authority to select leaders on behalf of our party," Turaki stated.
He urged all members of the PDP to remain composed and optimistic as they await a prompt hearing and resolution of all legal matters regarding the party's leadership in the Court of Appeal.
"We want to reassure you that the resurgence of our party, under Tanimu Turaki’s competent leadership, is progressing steadily.
"We are confident that we will navigate these challenges to present a stronger, more united party as a viable alternative to the current ruling government," he concluded. (NAN)
