An Ikeja court specializing in Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence has found two men guilty and sentenced them each to 15 years in prison for the death of a 12-year-old maid.
The accused, Edidiong Edem, 22, who works as a painter, and 21-year-old mechanic Alex Effiong-Etim, entered a plea bargain, resulting in an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Justice Abiola Soladoye declared them both guilty and enforced a custodial sentence of 15 years for each convict.
Justice Soladoye directed that the sentence would commence from the date they were initially remanded in a correctional facility.
The court heard that the two men violently assaulted the young girl by flogging her with a broom, which led to her unfortunate demise.
Initially, Edem and Effiong-Etim were arraigned on February 25, 2022, and they pleaded not guilty at that time.
Subsequently, they chose to enter a plea bargain agreement on the same date, which resulted in the revised charge of involuntary manslaughter.
During earlier court proceedings, the prosecution, represented by state counsel Oluwaseun Adewoye, revealed that the incident took place in January 2022 at Military Estate, located in the Eleko area of Lagos State.
The prosecution detailed how the convicts had recklessly used the broom to beat the young girl on her legs, causing wounds that became infected with tetanus and ultimately resulted in her death.
Furthermore, the prosecution noted that the actions of the men violated Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
