A mob in Kano State took matters into their own hands, lynching two men suspected of being involved in phone theft.
The incident took place close to Fatima Special Primary School in Gyadi-Gyadi, directly opposite the entrance of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, after the duo reportedly snatched a mobile phone from a girl in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the young girl had given her phone to the assailants but froze in fear when they threatened her, which prevented her from sounding an alarm.
The situation escalated when the suspects allegedly assaulted another male pedestrian and stole his phone as well, which drew the attention of bystanders.
Witnesses recounted that some nearby onlookers confronted the armed suspects, who were brandishing knives during the altercation.
A POS operator stationed near the Court Road roundabout described the suspects as provocative, as they challenged anyone to confront them. "This is not the first instance of phone snatching in this area; many locals are upset. When these two young men snatched phones from both a girl and a passerby, the crowd reacted aggressively," he commented.
He continued, "We observed as they were beaten until they were unconscious. I heard that one later succumbed to injuries at the hospital where they were taken after being rescued from the mob."
Another witness shared that he encountered a crowd near the Court Road roundabout while returning from Naibawa and soon discovered that it was a mob attacking the alleged criminals.
"They were brutally beaten, blood evident on their faces. The young men looked to be in their twenties," he added.
