Tragedy has befallen the University of Calabar (UNICAL) community as two of its graduating students, Gloria Ajor and Godwin Benjamin, perished in a road traffic accident.

The fatal incident occurred on Thursday night, April 9, 2026, while the students were travelling from Bekwarra Local Government Area to Calabar.

Sources report that the students were on their way to attend UNICAL's 38th convocation ceremony, which was scheduled for April 10.

The crash involved a Sienna bus carrying passengers. A Facebook user, Odey Matthias Ojeka, shared that multiple lives were lost in the accident, with other passengers sustaining various injuries.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene quickly mobilised to assist in the rescue efforts, transporting survivors to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.

Gloria Ajor was reportedly laid to rest on Saturday, April 11, marking a somber conclusion to the tragic events.
