The Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Germany, Ahmed Alattar, has urged Iran to halt its recent airstrikes, while affirming the UAE's right to defend itself.

In remarks published on Tuesday, Mr. Alattar informed the Handelsblatt newspaper that the UAE would continue its partnership with the United States to prevent further regional escalation, emphasizing that the UAE fully reserves its right to self-defence in accordance with international law.

Iran has been conducting attacks against Gulf states for approximately two and a half weeks, with the UAE experiencing significant aerial assaults.

Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's newly appointed supreme leader, has reportedly demanded that Gulf nations close US military bases on their soil, warning that attacks would persist otherwise.

Ambassador Alattar stated that the UAE is currently exercising self-defence and has called for Iran to immediately cease its offensive actions.

He highlighted that the UAE has consistently communicated its refusal to permit its territory from being utilized for attacks against Iran. Nevertheless, he accused Iran of deliberately targeting residential buildings, airports, and other civilian facilities with missiles and drones.

The UAE envoy pointed out that the country has invested years in cultivating its reputation as a secure environment in the Middle East, a hub for logistics, a financial centre, and a luxury tourism destination. He expressed concern that the ongoing conflict with Iran jeopardises this established business model.

Despite the tensions, Mr. Alattar indicated that he has not lost hope for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
