British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reportedly turned down a request from US President Donald Trump, which sought permission for the use of UK air bases in the event of military strikes against Iran.

As stated by several British media outlets, including The Times, the UK administration declined to allow US operations from RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia, both of which serve as long-established strategic centers for American military initiatives.

Sources indicate that the British government is apprehensive that granting such access could breach international law, particularly if it appears to support a preemptive military action. The UK government has suggested that there is no distinction in international law between a state executing an attack and one aiding an attack while having prior knowledge of it.

The UK Ministry of Defence has refrained from commenting on operational specifics, but it reiterated its backing of diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran. A representative highlighted that curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions is a crucial priority and underscored the importance of maintaining regional stability.

This development arises in the context of elevated tensions between the US and Iran, with the US increasing its military presence in the area. Recently, Trump alluded on social media that access to Diego Garcia and Fairford may be essential for any forthcoming operations against what he characterized as a “dangerous regime.”

Although neither of the bases was utilized in the previous year's limited US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, where American B-2 bombers departed directly from the US, experts affirm that a prolonged campaign would benefit significantly from closer staging locations to facilitate quicker refueling and rearming.

This reported disagreement strains US-UK ties at a delicate juncture, as both nations manage diplomatic negotiations, military deployments, and wider geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East.
