Ukraine and Russia carried out a prisoner exchange on Friday, with each side releasing 300 service members as part of a comprehensive two-day swap, during which many of the soldiers had been detained since the early days of the conflict in 2022.
This marks the second prisoner transfer between the nations this year, occurring shortly after renewed peace talks facilitated by the United States. On the first day of the swap, Thursday, both Kyiv and Moscow exchanged 200 prisoners of war each.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked that a considerable number of the released soldiers had been captured while defending critical frontline areas across Ukraine.
“They fought valiantly for Ukraine in various regions including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Mariupol,” Zelenskyy noted on Telegram, adding that most of those returned had been in captivity for over a year.
He also revealed that the exchange on Friday included the return of two Ukrainian civilians.
According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, the swap was orchestrated with the mediation of the United States and the United Arab Emirates, underscoring the significant role of international collaborators in enabling humanitarian operations between the conflicting parties.
Video footage released by Zelenskyy depicted numerous Ukrainian servicemen disembarking from large white buses, visibly joyful as they were welcomed by border officials. A heartfelt moment was captured when a returning soldier, while speaking on his cellphone, assured family members of his well-being, stating, “I am alive and healthy. Everything is fine. I do not have teeth,” reflecting on the harsh conditions faced during imprisonment.
The last prisoner exchange occurred in early February after negotiations in Abu Dhabi. Kyiv had anticipated subsequent discussions aimed at resolving the war to occur at the start of March, but those plans were delayed amid rising tensions in the Middle East, including military actions by the U.S. and Israel against Iran and retaliatory strikes by Tehran on locations housing American forces.
Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine is currently awaiting a new date from Washington for the next set of negotiations.
Despite the ongoing conflict, prisoner exchanges have remained one of the few avenues for cooperation between Kyiv and Moscow, providing rare moments of hope for families affected by the war on both sides.
