In a striking incident in Amaekpu, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Sunny Uma Okwara was punished by the Umuada, a powerful traditional assembly of women, for reportedly assaulting his elderly parents.

The incident, which gained attention through a viral video on social media, shows members of the Umuada administering 30 strokes of cane to Okwara after he was declared guilty of the allegations against him.

The Umuada, representing the daughters of the community, plays a significant role in traditional governance in Igbo society and consists of all married and unmarried daughters from a specific lineage.

Reports indicate that Okwara was also accused of beating his wife and was subsequently fined N20,000 by the women as part of the punishment.

According to sources, the assaults on his parents arose from minor disputes, leading the elderly couple to seek the intervention of the Umuada. The women's assembly stated that the fine would be used for traditional rites aimed at cleansing the community from the repercussions of Okwara’s actions.
