Senator Marco Rubio has described a report released by five European allies, which points to Russia's culpability in the demise of the late Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, as 'troubling.' Rubio indicated that the United States sees no grounds to contest the conclusions presented in the report.
During a press conference held in Bratislava, Slovakia, Rubio commented, 'We are naturally aware of the report. It is a troubling report. We are aware of the case of Mr. Navalny, and certainly, we have no reason to question it.'
The joint statement issued on Saturday by Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands asserted that analyses conducted on Navalny's remains conclusively identified epibatidine, a toxin derived from South American poison dart frogs and not naturally occurring in Russia.
Official Russian channels, which have consistently denied any involvement in Navalny's death while he was incarcerated in an Arctic penal facility, reportedly dismissed these findings as a 'Western propaganda hoax,' according to the TASS news agency.
When questioned about the US's decision not to formally endorse the joint statement, Rubio clarified that the initiative was spearheaded by the European countries. He explained, 'Those countries reached that conclusion. They coordinated it. Our choice not to join does not signify disagreement with the outcome. It was not our undertaking. Sometimes countries pursue their own actions based on the intelligence they have gathered.'
Navalny, a prominent figure in Russia's opposition movement, passed away in February 2024. He had been convicted of extremism and other charges, accusations he consistently refuted.
