Robin van Persie, the head coach of Feyenoord, has described the situation as heartbreaking following his son's significant injury that might end his career during their Europa League match against Real Betis, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Feyenoord.
Shaqueel van Persie, the 19-year-old son of the coach, was brought onto the pitch in the 73rd minute of the game. He made an immediate impact by assisting Casper Tengstedt's goal, which temporarily equalized the match. However, just ten minutes later, tragedy struck as he awkwardly landed on his right leg. His knee seemed to bend backward, causing visible distress as he was carried off the field on a stretcher.
After the match, Van Persie conveyed his emotional response, revealing that he felt more like a father than a coach during the incident.
"The outlook doesn’t seem promising. We are still waiting for results from medical examinations, but initial assessments are not encouraging," Van Persie stated in an interview with Ziggo Sport.
He further expressed his concern, saying, "You always hold your breath when a player goes down with an injury, and today it was Shaqueel. While you wish for the best, the first indications of a serious issue are heartbreaking."
As both a coach and a father, he shared the duality of his feelings, stating, "It’s extremely difficult and painful to witness my son facing such a situation. It’s truly a heartbreaking experience."
