Nineteen-year-old Victoria Mboko has achieved a significant milestone by entering the WTA Top 10 rankings. Her rise within the women’s tennis circuit has been evident over the past year, culminating in her current ranking.
Just last week, Mboko, for the first time in her career, joined the elite ranks, following an extraordinary year on the WTA Tour.
To illustrate her remarkable progress, it’s noteworthy that she was ranked No. 333 this time last year, competing and winning on the ITF Circuit. Mboko started her 2025 season with four consecutive ITF titles, which laid the groundwork for her impressive leap of 323 spots in the rankings. Remarkably, it only took her 357 days to transition from the Top 200 to the Top 10, marking the fastest ascent since Jennifer Capriati's surge in 1990.
Her defining achievement came on home ground at the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Montreal. Entering the tournament as a wildcard, she achieved a dazzling title run by overcoming notable players such as Coco Gauff in the fourth round, Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals, and finally defeating Naomi Osaka in the championship match. This victory made her the second wildcard ever to win the event. By the end of 2025, Mboko added another title at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open and concluded the year ranked within the top 20, having begun it outside the top 300.
Continuing her impressive form, Mboko has kicked off 2026 with significant achievements, reaching her first WTA 500 final at the Adelaide International and advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open, marking her best Grand Slam performance to date. This strong start was capped by her runner-up position at the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open in Doha, where she faced Karolina Muchova. Her performance in Doha catapulted her into the Top 10, making her the first player this season to achieve such a ranking.
She is now the fourth Canadian woman to reach this level, joining the ranks of Carling Bassett-Seguso, Eugenie Bouchard, and Bianca Andreescu. At just 19, she is also the youngest player to break into the Top 10 since Mirra Andreeva did so last year. The presence of two teenagers in the Top 10, including Andreeva at No. 7, marks the first instance in over a decade and a half since both Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka were in the elite group in 2009.
Mboko’s success is not merely based on her rankings; she has proven herself against tough competitors, achieving four wins over Top 10 players, including Gauff, Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, and Rybakina.
Looking ahead, she is set to make her debut at Indian Wells, one of the premier events on the tennis calendar. Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard has already expressed confidence in her potential for a deep run, and it’s easy to understand why.
