New photographs have surfaced, revealing for the first time the shotgun reportedly used by Cole Tomas Allen during a disturbance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
The firearm was photographed on the floor of the Washington Hilton, the venue where the 31-year-old suspect was taken into custody by security personnel on Saturday evening. Images showed him topless and face down following his arrest.
Authorities have indicated that Allen was carrying the shotgun, as well as a handgun and several knives, as he attempted to bypass security and enter the main ballroom. Reports suggest his alleged intention was to target President Donald Trump and other high-ranking administration officials.
Further images released after the event depict Allen, wrapped in a thermal blanket, resting against a marble column inside the hotel.
DC Metro Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll stated, "We have secured a room here in the hotel, and again, we’ll go through the appropriate procedures to determine what was inside there."
Investigators are operating under the belief that Allen had been a registered guest at the hotel prior to the alleged attack.
President Trump has since described the perpetrator as a "lone wolf whack job" from California. Details regarding Allen's background, including his work as a mechanical engineer, an independent game developer, and a past recipient of a "Teacher of the Month" award, are currently under thorough examination by federal agents as they strive to ascertain a definitive motive for the violent incident.
