The wife of a forest guard who was murdered during a bandit raid in Oba-Isin has been released after a ransom of N5 million was paid, as confirmed by a senior community leader on Tuesday.
Shola Oba Ogunleye, the Otun to the Kabiyesi (the traditional ruler’s deputy), reported the killing of Mr. Raheem Ogunrinde, also known as Baba Kafaya, and the subsequent release of his spouse, Mrs. Funke Ogunrinde.
"Her abductors received N5 million as ransom. We had to secure loans, liquidate assets, and borrow money to meet the ransom demands to save her life, as the children left behind by her late husband are still very young."
He also urged individuals who had fled the area to return, assuring that stability had returned and expressing hope for a peaceful future.
The unfortunate events unfolded over the weekend when bandits invaded Oba-Isin around 7 p.m., instilling fear among residents. Mr. Ogunrinde engaged the attackers in a shootout but was tragically killed. Following the deadly encounter, numerous residents sought safety by escaping to nearby towns.
Initially, the abductors had requested an exorbitant ransom of N100 million for Mrs. Ogunrinde’s release, as per a family source who spoke to reporters.
"The bandits contacted us and demanded N100 million to keep our mother alive. We scrambled to gather the funds and even requested a reduction, but they were unyielding at first," the source recounted.
Since the incident, security personnel have been deployed to Oba-Isin, maintaining a vigilant presence to deter any future attacks.
