Nyesom Wike, who serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has asserted that the political maneuvers leading up to the 2027 general elections will not compromise his ability to implement significant projects for the benefit of residents within the territory.
Wike offered this assurance during a recent visit to review various ongoing projects in Abuja on Wednesday.
He has faced scrutiny for purportedly prioritizing political engagements in Rivers State over his responsibilities in the FCT. As a former governor of Rivers State, Wike is currently embroiled in a long-standing political struggle with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The minister emphasized his capability to effectively juggle both political and ministerial duties, placing a strong focus on serving the public effectively. Wike stated, "While politics is an entirely different sphere from my role as FCT Minister, my obligation is to ensure the welfare of the people."
He clarified that political matters have their specific timing, and essential work will persist. He stressed that it is crucial to oversee contractors and ensure timely payments to enhance community satisfaction with the government's initiative, dubbed the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Wike conveyed confidence that political events would not detract from his work, adding, "The main way politics could influence my job is by bringing joy to people through ensuring that the Renewed Hope Agenda is tangible and effective."
Regarding the inspected projects, Wike expressed his contentment with the ongoing construction of a road that connects Baze University, the Body of Benchers, Nile University, and the Wupa Light Rail Station in the Idu Area of Abuja. He reported that the contractor has committed to completing the project by May, aligning its inauguration with President Bola Tinubu's third anniversary.
Additionally, Wike monitored the progress of the extension building for the Body of Benchers, noting that construction was approximately 80% complete, with only landscaping remaining.
He also reviewed a 7km road project which links the Airport Road to Tunga Madaki and several surrounding communities. This development is in line with the FCTA's promise to better connect these areas with the rest of the FCT. Furthermore, he called for the initiation of work to link this new road with Zuba.
