A 36-year-old woman has been accused of starting a fire at her boyfriend's house following a disagreement within their relationship. The event took place in Ndwedwe, within the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Emergency responders from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were alerted to the scene around 14:43 after local residents reported a woman setting a property alight. Eyewitness accounts suggest the woman was seen entering the residence carrying a blue carrier bag, which she reportedly took with her as she departed the premises with the bag appearing empty.

Shortly after her departure and after she had walked some distance away, smoke began to emanate from the house. Members of the public confronted the woman about the fire and, according to reports, physically assaulted her.

When questioned, the woman indicated that she had experienced ongoing problems with her boyfriend but did not provide specific details. She claimed her reason for visiting the residence was to perform a wellness check, as she feared he might harm himself. She stated that he was not present at the time, and she then left the property.

The owner of the house later arrived and informed Reaction Unit officers that the accused woman was his girlfriend. He mentioned that he had dropped her off in Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal, where she lives, and was unaware that she had traveled to his home.

The woman was subsequently handed over to the Ndwedwe South African Police Service (SAPS) for further inquiry into the incident.
