Maria Adoga, a resident of Makurdi in Benue State, has approached an Upper Area Court revealing that her husband, Moses, is an alcoholic who often subjects her to severe abuse.

In her petition for divorce, Maria elaborated that they were married in 2013 according to Idoma customary law and subsequently had a church wedding at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, located in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state. However, she noted that their marriage has reached an irreparable stage.

Maria confirmed that the couple has three children together.

Reflecting on their relationship, she stated, “During our courtship and in the early days of our marriage, my husband was caring, but his demeanor shifted, and he grew hostile towards me.

She continued, “My husband frequently beats me severely. I have endured numerous injuries and cannot tolerate this violence any longer.

“He consumes various types of alcohol and behaves erratically in front of our children and neighbors,” Maria asserted.

Maria claimed that Moses has a consistent pattern of leaving their home for weeks on end after receiving his monthly salary, according to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Moreover, she articulated that Moses fails to fulfill his financial obligations, neglecting to pay the rent while also shirking his duties as a father and husband.

In 2020, she noted that he exhibited signs of a potential mental illness, leading her to believe that neither she nor their children are safe cohabiting with him.

Consequently, Maria urged the court to sanction their separation, accompanied by a request for custody of their children.

She also sought an allowance of N50,000 monthly for the children’s upkeep, plus an annual education fund of N300,000.

Responding to the allegations, Moses expressed to the court that he is eager to resolve their differences amicably.

The presiding magistrate, Mr. Vershima Hwande, has scheduled an adjournment for the continuing proceedings.
