Bello Shehu Tijjani is the representative for the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in the ongoing case regarding Walida. He shares insights on the matter.
How did you become aware of Walida's situation?
Tijjani stated that they received a notification from the Department of State Services (DSS) inviting them to their office. They expressed interest in involving the council in addressing the issue as part of a civil society aimed at representing the youth.
Have you had any interaction with Walida's parents?
Indeed, Tijjani confirmed a meeting with Walida’s parents during their most recent gathering.
What do you believe the family requires?
In a previous meeting, it was indicated that Badamasi, Walida's uncle, was approached to see Walida. His response suggested he preferred to accompany her deceased form rather than meet with her and her child. However, at a subsequent meeting where both the uncle and parents were present, Tijjani noted they expressed a desire to take Walida and her daughter with them.
Were you informed about the medical evaluation conducted by the NMA?
During the last assembly, it was established that since Walida is above 18 years, she possesses the constitutional right to make her own choices. They had agreed to finalize decisions that day, but the family's attorney proposed a medical assessment to confirm Walida's mental state. There was consensus to delay decisions until this examination was conducted.
You have been invited today, but Walida's parents are absent. What are your thoughts on this?
Tijjani expressed surprise at their absence, noting they were the ones who requested the postponement pending the medical examination of Walida’s mental health. He felt it was crucial to discuss the case seriously, as the information circulating does not align with what they have learned directly from Walida.
Do you believe the State Service should return Walida to her parents?
Based on his observations throughout the meetings, Tijjani remarked that Walida's situation appears to reflect abandonment. He emphasized that she is a victim of family neglect.
