The Zamfara State Government has declared its intent to become a leader in Nigeria's digital economy. This initiative is driven by extensive reforms and significant investments in information technology, led by Governor Dauda Lawal.
A key part of this digital transformation is the establishment of the Zamfara State Information Technology Development Agency (ZITDA), which has created a framework for innovation, strategic partnerships, and swift digital advancement in the state.
In a recent presentation, Dr. Habib Gajam, the Executive Secretary of ZITDA, highlighted the digital achievements of the last two years, indicating that the Governor's leadership has transformed governance and empowered the state's residents through technology.
"Governor Dauda Lawal has modernised governance and empowered Zamfara citizens through technology," Gajam stated, affirming that these reforms are in line with the Rescue Mission agenda.
He pointed out that ZITDA has achieved significant milestones over the past two years, including the Zamfara State House of Assembly passing a pivotal bill that established the Zamfara Institute of Information Technology (ZIIT). This institution is designed to serve as a central hub for ICT education, research, and innovation within the state.
Additionally, Dr. Gajam revealed that Zamfara has become the first state in Nigeria to implement a Digital Literacy Framework (ZDLF), aimed at providing citizens with essential digital skills that promote inclusive economic growth, effective e-governance, and technological advancement. ZITDA has taken the lead on this initiative’s implementation.
On the international front, the state government secured a strategic partnership with Oracle during a signing event in London on April 29, 2025, as part of Oracle University’s Skills Development Initiative.
“This collaboration focuses on enhancing youth development, building workforce capacities, and expanding Zamfara’s engagement in the global digital economy,” Gajam emphasized, noting that it will facilitate top-tier ICT training for the youth in the state.
Zamfara’s advancements in digital technology have garnered national accolades, including recognition as the top state in the Digital Technology Infrastructure Development category during the peer-review session of the 12th National Council on Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.
The state also received the award for Best State in E-Government and was the first runner-up in ICT Human Capital Development at the 13th National Council on Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy held in Jos, Plateau State.
According to Dr. Gajam, these achievements reflect a collective effort, visionary leadership, and ZITDA's dedication to empowering citizens through technology.
He reiterated the agency's commitment to fostering innovation, expanding digital accessibility, and ensuring that technology becomes a driving force for sustainable development throughout Zamfara State.
