Zikoko Citizen is preparing to host the second edition of its signature event, The Citizen Townhall. In collaboration with Luminate and the Open Society Foundation, this gathering aims to be a pivotal civic event for young Nigerians as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
Scheduled for February 28, 2026, at Four Points By Sheraton in Lagos, this year’s theme, "Who Shapes the Nigerian Life?" shifts the narrative from the usual election debates to focus on the institutions and systems that directly impact the lives of young Nigerians.
A central feature of the event will be the official launch of The Citizen Report, a comprehensive data resource focusing on youth opinions regarding governance and civic participation, as well as the collective actions that reflect their lived experiences.
An Engaging Civic Experience
The 2026 Citizen Townhall is not intended to be a typical policy conference. Instead, it will offer an experience that integrates data, storytelling, and cultural elements to guide attendees through the complexities of governance.
Prominent features include:
\- The Citizen Exhibition Walkthrough: An immersive and interactive segment based on insights from The Citizen Report. Participants will engage with how government institutions and budgets influence health, safety, and overall dignity through data visualizations, sticker walls, and reflective cards.
\- Impactful Panel Discussions: Three panels dedicated to dissecting topics such as accountability, representation, and civic activism. These discussions will include youth policy leaders, media representatives, and development professionals from partner organizations.
\- Intimate Fireside Chat: A session centered on how individual lives are impacted by Nigerian systems, providing a candid perspective on challenging existing norms.
\- Launch of The Citizen Report: The formal release of influential data that highlights young people's perspectives on crucial issues, including misinformation that has dissuaded over 60% of young Nigerians from actively participating in politics.
The Significance of This Event
With 70% of Nigeria’s population being under 35 years old, this youth demographic represents a vital component of the nation’s social fabric. Yet, they remain largely sidelined in formal political spheres. The Townhall is strategically timed to create a platform for shared civic perspectives and equip young attendees with the language necessary to engage effectively in their communities and online.
The lives of Nigerians continue to be shaped daily, sparking the essential question: by whom? This event presents an opportunity to determine the direction ahead.
