The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, has stated that he does not have an anointed successor and has not designated any candidate ahead of his term's conclusion in May 2027.
Zulum made this declaration during a meeting on Sunday evening with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the Government House in Maiduguri.
The governor emphasized that his administration's focus remains on enhancing security and advancing development in Borno, rather than engaging in political succession.
In his remarks to party officials, elected representatives, and members, Zulum urged for fairness, transparency, and justice within the upcoming APC congresses, highlighting that the legitimacy of the electoral process is vital for the unity and future strength of the party.
He encouraged stakeholders to permit new leaders to arise democratically within the party, asserting that new leadership would bolster the grassroots foundation of the party and foster inclusiveness.
Zulum dismissed any claims suggesting that he was influencing party leadership or electoral nominations, affirming that he has not supported any candidate for party or elective roles.
"I do not have a candidate for any position, nor do I know who will take my place. I have entrusted the selection of leaders to the Almighty Allah and the democratic choice of APC members along with the citizens of Borno State," he stated.
In a bid to enhance party unity and engagement, Zulum announced the formation of two committees aimed at advancing the APC's e-registration and reconciliation among its members.
A 10-member committee, led by former Nigerian Ambassador to China, Baba Ahmed Jidda, will be responsible for the e-registration initiative, with members recruited from the state's three senatorial districts.
Attendees of the meeting included Borno State's Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur; former governor, Maina Ma’aji Lawan; APC Deputy National Chairman, Ali Bukar Dalori; and State APC Chairman, Bello Ayuba.
Also present were three former deputy governors—Ali Abubakar Jatau, Adamu Shettima Dibal, and Usman Mamman Durkwa—as well as Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, and ten members of the House of Representatives.
During the meeting, one lawmaker, Dr. Midala Balami, announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, his deputy, Engr. Abdullahi Askira, and 25 other Assembly members were also in attendance, along with senior government and party officials.
