The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has declared its intention to host the 2026 Obafemi Awolowo Memorial Lecture on Friday, March 6, 2026.
This year’s annual lecture is scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. at the notable Efunyela Hall. The theme will be ‘Politics as Future-Making: Awolowo and Leadership as Theory of Action’, attracting scholars, dignitaries, professionals, and the public from various regions.
As per a statement issued by the Foundation’s Executive Director, Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, the chosen theme underscores the critical necessity for visionary and ethical leadership in Nigeria and across the African continent.
Dosumu emphasized that “the lecture will examine the lasting significance of Obafemi Awolowo’s political philosophy, particularly his view of leadership as disciplined, community-focused, and centered on societal transformation.
The gathering will be chaired by distinguished elder statesman and diplomat Emeka Anyaoku, who previously held the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations. Professor Wale Adebanwi, the Presidential Penn Compact Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, will serve as the Guest Lecturer, aiming to contextualize Awolowo’s concepts within current discussions on governance, democratic accountability, and national progress.
The Awolowo Memorial Lecture stands as the flagship annual event of the Foundation, developed to foster critical dialogue regarding the principles, ideals, and public policy heritage of the late sage.
Over the years, it has evolved into a significant intellectual forum for discussions surrounding democratic governance, social justice, and human development in Nigeria and beyond.
