Nasarawa State is witnessing a remarkable political upheaval never seen in its recent history.

Prominent figure and two-time governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel David Ombugadu, has made headlines by resigning from the PDP, switching to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and less than a week later, reverting back to the PDP, all within a span of three weeks.

Ombugadu first rose to prominence in 2011 when he was elected to the House of Representatives for the Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Constituency on a Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) ticket. His tenure in the National Assembly is credited with bringing about various development projects for his constituents.

In 2015, he transitioned to the PDP, reclaiming his seat due to his commendable track record, which enhanced his influence beyond his immediate constituency.

His popularity, thereafter, soared as he beat out other candidates to become the PDP’s governorship candidate in 2019; however, he was unsuccessful against Governor Abdullahi Sule of the APC in the general elections.

Ombugadu once again contested for the governorship in 2023 but faced defeat at the hands of Governor Sule in a tightly contested race, which ended up in the courts. The tribunal initially declared him the winner, but the rulings from the Appeal Court and Supreme Court reversed that decision.

Following these elections, Ombugadu remained active within the PDP. However, rumors of him commandeering party leadership to secure the 2027 governorship ticket ensued, which subsequently led to a crisis within the party as key stakeholders defected to other political parties.

Political analysts believe that these internal challenges, along with crises at the national level, have severely impacted the PDP in Nasarawa, prompting many who intended to contest under its platform to explore other options.

In his resignation letter from the PDP, Ombugadu cited leadership conflicts and internal strife as the reasons for his departure. He mentioned that discussions with his supporters guided his choice, expressing that the situation within the party had rendered his “political path unclear.”

Regarding his registration with the APC, Ombugadu stated that he was drawn to support President Bola Tinubu's transformation agenda and Governor Sule's development initiatives.

The political arena was taken aback by Ombugadu's decision, generating speculations over his future intentions and the implications for the PDP, raising doubts about its stability and capability to compete with the APC in the upcoming elections.

Ombugadu's supporters argue that his move to the APC was strategic, setting him up for potential success in 2027, while the APC views his entry as a means to reinforce their prospects in future elections.

He promptly refuted claims that his defection aimed to secure a deputy governor position in 2027, emphasizing that his goal is to serve the populace and foster progress in Nasarawa State.

Clarifying his political aspirations, he stated, “I aim to contest the senatorial by-election for Nasarawa North to fill the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki's seat, and by divine favor, I will reach the Senate and subsequently vie for the governorship in 2027.”

However, the situation shifted once more when reports emerged about his resignation from the APC, with sources suggesting that his gubernatorial ambitions were being hampered by the ruling party.

It was reported that Ombugadu made the decision to leave the APC upon realizing that the by-election to fill the Senate seat in his area may not coincide with party primaries, hence he decided to postpone the contest.

Although he has not officially declared his return to the PDP, Ombugadu was seen attending the PDP national convention in Abuja, which many interpret as a confirmation of his return to the party.

Insiders also indicated that his presence and activities at the convention signified he has rejoined the PDP.

Ombugadu's supporters are optimistic about his future within the party, despite the challenges that await him, including the suspension of the party's state chairman, which adds to the ongoing turmoil.

Younger politician Lazarus Salaki referred to Ombugadu’s current defection spree as a “strange scenario,” expressing worries about the politician’s stability and reliability.

Salaki expressed concern that this shifting allegiance could diminish public trust in Ombugadu, emphasizing that his inconsistency might prove detrimental.

He criticized the timing of Ombugadu’s defection, noting that the APC's registration portal was closed, potentially complicating actions for his supporters, which could suggest a miscalculation on Ombugadu’s part that led to his quick departure from the APC.

Former state commissioner Professor Salihu Ahmed Alizaga advised Ombugadu to address the public regarding his abrupt APC resignation, urging clarity about the motivations behind his moves.

Alizaga posited that Ombugadu's initial decision to join the APC stemmed from a commitment to contribute to the party’s transformation agenda; however, he feels disillusioned by unfulfilled promises.

“Ombugadu must further clarify his reasons to the public, particularly his supporters, to convincingly explain his actions at this crucial time,” Alizaga stated.

He described Ombugadu's political future as “very promising,” highlighting his history of delivering projects across the state while remaining dedicated to transforming the lives of the people of Nasarawa.

“He's not a tribalist or a religious bigot; he’s a politician with a vision for the state,” Alizaga asserted. “We introduced him to politics, and we are aware of his capabilities.”

Ombugadu’s frequent political maneuvers have ignited debate, with some praising him for his adaptability while others condemn it as opportunism.

His aspirations for the governorship in 2027 now face uncertainty, as his recent actions have added new challenges to his public persona.

Meanwhile, the PDP is grappling with its own crises, necessitating regrouping and strategic planning to regain lost ground.

As Governor Sule completes his second term and opts not to seek re-election for the governorship in 2027, concerns grow that whoever emerges as the APC candidate may lack the necessary influence to compete against Ombugadu if he secures the PDP nomination.

Professor Musa Yusha’u Dalhatu from the Federal University of Lafia, a political science lecturer, characterized Ombugadu’s frequent party shifts as typical behavior among Nigerian politicians who prioritize personal ambition over the welfare of the populace.

He contends that Ombugadu's initial move to join the APC was likely motivated by personal aspirations and expectations made to him, but that he quickly realized that those interests couldn’t be realized within that framework.

Dalhatu believes Ombugadu’s return to the PDP resulted from unsuccessful consultations before his APC defection, alongside pressure from constituents and the public.

He cautioned that Ombugadu’s conduct might have ramifications, with many questioning his integrity and dedication to their cause.

The competition for the governorship seat in Nasarawa is intensifying, and the eventual outcome remains highly unpredictable.
