Dr. Kabiru Sufi, a political commentator from Kano, shares his insights regarding the consequences of Governor Kabiru Yusuf's decision to leave the NNPP during this interview.
What are your thoughts on Governor Yusuf's intended transition to the APC?
The outcome of his switch largely hinges on the environment he encounters within the APC, which is an established political organization with significant figures in power at both national and state levels, alongside the agreements made with existing members of the APC.
What impact will Abba's departure have on the Kwankwasiyya movement?
As I previously mentioned, Governor Abba's transition to the APC will significantly influence his political trajectory within the party. However, leaving the NNPP may effectively mean severing ties with Kwankwasiyya altogether. Personally, I believe that the Kwankwasiyya supporters who choose to remain have endured through this journey, indicating a surprising degree of resilience.
Signs suggest that the Kwankwasiyya movement is preparing to progress, with or without Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. This reflects a readiness to cultivate a fresh cadre of leadership within the movement at the state level.
Does this imply that Kwankwasiyya can persist despite Governor Abba's exit?
Essentially, it suggests that the movement has a chance to nominate another gubernatorial candidate aligned with their chosen political platform and to carry on their agenda without Governor Abba among them. They might even consider establishing an entirely new party rather than continuing under the NNPP banner. They have done so before, and I believe they can replicate that success again.
I personally foresee this as a probable direction for the Kwankwasiyya movement in this state.
Isn't there a risk that joining a party with an entrenched political framework might pose challenges for the newcomers?
Not necessarily. Initially, I indicated that the situation each person encounters upon joining, along with how they are embraced by the party, will significantly matter. It's possible that they negotiated arrangements beforehand with the leadership of both parties regarding the terms tied to their defection.
It is also believed that the agreed-upon terms may largely depend on the presidency's willingness to accept and act upon these changes. This shift has already transformed the political landscape within the state and country.
What recommendations do you have for both the defectors and those welcoming them to ensure a prosperous political future?
A framework should be established to guarantee that both groups achieve equilibrium in terms of party equality and opportunities. Clearly, there is likely to be friction between Governor Abba's ambitions and those who have been long-standing members of the party.
As such, it is vital to consider what the new arrangements will entail. Who will assume specific roles, and who will relinquish their positions to whom? Ultimately, the success of this transition will depend greatly on this agreement.
Everything hinges on their ability to navigate the situation effectively without alienating any party. The consensus should be that all participants feel valued and significant, just like others.
