Ayodele Adio, an aspirant for the Lagos State House of Assembly representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has spoken out against the recent 13% fare increase across all transportation schemes under the state’s Bus Reform Initiative, which includes the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and regular routes.
As reported by PREMIUM TIMES, the fare rise was approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in February after requests from authorized public transport operators who highlighted increasing operational costs and economic pressures.
The governor indicated that the fare adjustment, effective from the 2nd of March, aimed to alleviate the effects of ongoing economic challenges on public transport operations in Lagos.
In response, Adio released a statement on Sunday calling for the state government and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to roll back the fare increase.
He argued that the fare hike comes at a particularly tough time for many Lagos residents who are already grappling with significant economic difficulties.
Adio pointed out that the situation is further complicated by rising inflation, escalating fuel prices, and broader global economic factors, including the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
He emphasized, "Public transportation serves as a lifeline for workers, students, traders, and small business owners throughout Lagos. Increasing fares now, while families are struggling with higher costs of food, energy, and living, will only add to the burdens faced by ordinary Lagosians."
Adio believes that raising BRT fares will not effectively solve the operational issues facing transport providers in the state. Many residents rely heavily on BRT and regulated bus services for their daily commutes and sources of income.
He cautioned that the fare hike would deepen the financial strain on commuters without addressing the underlying structural challenges in the system.
Adio concluded by urging the state government to reevaluate and reverse the fare increase and explore alternative solutions to support transport operators. This could include targeted subsidies, improvements in operational efficiency, and broader consultations with pertinent stakeholders.
"During such challenging times, public policy should focus on providing economic relief and social protection. The government needs to ensure that public transportation remains affordable and accessible for the millions who rely on it daily," he added.
