Edo State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kassim Afegbua, has refuted claims that the All Progressives Congress (APC) or Governor Monday Okpebholo were connected to the recent disturbance at the residence of former governor John Odigie-Oyegun.
During an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, Afegbua characterized the event as a consequence of internal disagreements within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), asserting it bore "all the imprimatur of ADC versus ADC."
He explained that tensions had been escalating in the days preceding the incident, following a political gathering at Oyegun's house where certain party members were reportedly denied entry. The situation, he added, escalated when disgruntled members protested and chanted outside the property.
Afegbua affirmed that the governor acted with promptness when initial reports of gunshots near the residence emerged, instructing the Commissioner of Police to launch an immediate investigation. He noted that fragments from the gunfire were said to have entered the Government House premises, necessitating swift action.
He dismissed suggestions that the proximity of Oyegun's home to Government House was an implicit criticism of the governor, emphasizing that security agencies were alerted as soon as the initial disturbance began.
The commissioner also criticized former presidential candidate Peter Obi, deeming his conclusion on the matter as hasty and accusing him of politicizing the event without acknowledging the internal rifts within the ADC.
Afegbua assured that law enforcement bodies would conduct a comprehensive investigation into the attack and bring to justice any individuals found responsible, stressing the state government's commitment to preventing political violence.
He further defended Governor Okpebholo against accusations of promoting thuggery, presenting him as a leader focused on enhancing infrastructure, strengthening security, and promoting inclusivity in Edo State.
