Nigerian disc jockey and record producer Imohiosen Patrick, widely known as DJ Neptune, has voiced significant apprehension regarding the increasing presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in music production. He suggests that this advanced technology may soon necessitate the retirement of human music producers.
During a recent discussion with media personality Nnamdi Nwabasili, also known as N6, the celebrated artist shared a striking personal encounter that highlighted the rapid progress of AI tools within the music industry.
DJ Neptune recounted being presented with a song for potential signing and being thoroughly impressed by its production quality, describing it as "out of this world."
However, his initial enthusiasm gave way to astonishment when he learned that the entire track had been generated using artificial intelligence.
"After listening, I told the guy to sign the artiste because what I heard was exceptional. Then my guy told me it was AI work. It shook me," he stated.
These remarks followed concerns previously raised by N6 on the social media platform X. The media personality had cautioned about an impending disruption within the music industry's ecosystem.
"AI is quietly about to retire the entire music production and mastering industry. I have seen scary things tonight. God help all of us in this ecosystem," N6 had posted.
The swift development of AI-powered tools has already begun to reshape music production globally. These technologies are impacting various aspects, from beat creation and sound engineering to vocal replication and mastering.
As these tools become more accessible to both new and established artists, they are lowering the entry barriers in a field that has traditionally demanded considerable skill.
In acknowledgment of these evolving trends, the Recording Academy, which oversees the Grammy Awards, has updated its eligibility guidelines. The revised rules permit songs created with AI assistance to be considered for awards, provided there is significant human creative input.
Despite this formal recognition, the growing reliance on AI continues to spark considerable debate among music industry professionals, raising questions about artistic authenticity, originality, and intellectual property rights – fundamental elements that have always defined musical expression.
