Akwa United has announced the departure of nine players as it gears up for the second phase of the Nigeria National League (NNL) season.
The players who have been let go include Anietie Uko, Erikan Francis, Lazarus Ebuka, Itebu James, and Joshua Unoro.
The remaining players released are Babatunde Omosebi, Onhanedo Onyedikachi, Emenike John, and Emmanuel Ita.
Anietie Uko is set to join Tanzanian club Mbeya Kwanza, while Erikan Francis has secured a loan move to Heartland.
On the other hand, Akwa United has added five new players to enhance its squad for the forthcoming phase.
The new phase is projected to kick off on February 14, 2026.
Additionally, the Nationwide League One (NLO) has communicated critical licensing requirements to Division One and U-19 Youth League clubs in anticipation of the 2025/26 season.
In a statement issued by its Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Olushola Ogunnowo, the NLO confirmed the reintroduction of the traditional home-and-away league format, beginning in the 2026 season. This reversion is aimed at reinvigorating competitive spirit and professionalism within the league.
Clubs are now obliged to independently submit player and official licenses to ensure better accuracy and transparency. Each team is required to present three distinct kits—home, away, and alternates—along with permanent shirt numbers for the entire season. Furthermore, clubs must install branded perimeter panels at their home venues to elevate matchday presentation.
The deadline for submission of all documentation and kit designs is set for March 15, 2026. Failure to meet this deadline will lead to sanctions.
