Amazon's cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), disclosed on Monday that its facilities in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates experienced connectivity problems. This situation emerges as regional tensions intensify, following retaliatory strikes initiated by Iran.

The reported outages occur amidst a series of missile and drone attacks launched by Iran, which appear to be responses to recent military actions by the US and Israel. These Iranian strikes have allegedly impacted airports, ports, and residential areas across the Gulf region.

According to Amazon, one of its AWS availability zones in the UAE lost power after "objects" struck the site, resulting in sparks and a fire. While the company indicated that partial service restoration has been achieved in the UAE, it has advised clients to migrate to alternative AWS regions while its engineers investigate further "connectivity issues and error rates."

Amazon has not definitively stated whether the incident at the UAE data centre is directly connected to the Iranian strikes. The company declined to comment on any potential links.

Furthermore, Amazon reported connectivity challenges at its Bahrain data centre, though no specific cause was provided. Attempts to solicit further comment from the company were not immediately successful.

AWS maintains a network of multiple availability zones throughout the Middle East, serving businesses, government entities, and financial institutions that depend on cloud infrastructure for their essential operations. Any extended service interruption could have a significant impact on a broad spectrum of digital services within the region.

This event highlights the increasing susceptibility of global technology infrastructure to geopolitical instability. As military tensions escalate, the effects are beginning to extend to commercial and civilian systems, moving beyond traditional security concerns.
