The Anambra State Police Command has taken action following a viral video that depicts officers allegedly harassing a citizen in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The spouse of the victim shared the ordeal her husband faced when police stopped him and requested his documentation. Despite providing all necessary papers, she recounted that the officers handcuffed her husband, accused him of theft, and demanded a ransom of N500,000. Out of fear for his safety and uncertain if they were genuine police or kidnappers, he consented to pay N200,000, leading them to a POS operator for the withdrawal.
On Monday, March 16, Anambra Police PRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, issued a statement indicating that there would be no protection for the officers involved in this incident.
“The Command informs the public that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Okpoko has intercepted the complaint and has taken steps to ascertain the identities of the officers involved in the alleged misconduct,” the statement revealed.
As a result, the Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, directed the DPO to produce the officers for an investigation and potential disciplinary action in accordance with the Nigeria Police Force's regulations.
“The preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest the following:
“The DPO previously assigned officers to identify those allegedly involved in the incident.
“The money reportedly extracted from the victim has been returned, indicating serious misconduct by the officers.
“The involvement of the POS operator hints at possible collusion in the matter.
“The Command reiterates its commitment to not shielding any officer found responsible. Appropriate disciplinary actions will be carried out per the established protocols.
“The Anambra State Police Command remains dedicated to professionalism, accountability, and protecting the rights of all citizens.
“Further information will be communicated to the public.”
