Former Senator Ayo Arise has intensified his campaign for a return to the Senate for Ekiti North, asserting his demand for an open and transparent primary election within the All Progressives Congress (APC) rather than the imposition of candidates through consensus. Arise is advocating for a vote- based selection process.
During a rally held on Tuesday in Oye Local Government Area, Arise communicated his stance to party members and supporters. He emphasized that only a fair and competitive primary election can accurately reflect the desires of the party stakeholders.
He stated that any consensus arrangement that does not have the full agreement of all relevant parties goes against democratic principles and the governing rules of the APC.
“Consensus is meaningless without the people’s consent. When there is no agreement, the party’s constitution clearly dictates that a vote must be held,” Arise asserted.
His remarks come at a time when internal discussions within the party are focusing on strategies to streamline candidate selection for the upcoming general elections. This has sparked varied reactions among aspirants vying for positions across the district.
Arise, who previously served as the Senator for Ekiti North from 2007 to 2011, expressed confidence in his prospects, citing strong support from the grassroots across the five local government areas that constitute the senatorial district.
He further stated that his political standing remains solid due to his enduring connection with his constituents.
“I have a proven track record and have delivered for my people. They know me and understand my principles. Those seeking easier routes will find they cannot succeed in a free and fair contest,” he added.
