President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police and appointed Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as the new Acting Inspector-General of Police effective immediately.

A press statement from the State House, issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, noted that Egbetokun resigned due to pressing family issues. In his response to the resignation, President Tinubu expressed his deep gratitude for Egbetokun’s long-standing and commendable service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country at large.

Egbetokun’s tenure as Inspector-General began in June 2023 when he was made the 22nd occupant of that office. His appointment was ratified by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023. Although he was scheduled to retire upon reaching the retirement age of 60 in September 2024, his earlier term was extended in accordance with the updated provisions of the Police Act, with a full term originally set to run until June 2027.

In his acknowledgment of Egbetokun’s service, President Tinubu praised his dedication and professionalism, remarking on his commitment to enhancing the nation's internal security during his time in office.

Tunji Disu steps into this acting role amid significant security challenges facing the nation. The President’s decision was based on adherence to current laws and legal guidelines, emphasizing the urgent need for experienced leadership within the Nigeria Police Force at this critical juncture.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that Disu’s extensive experience, operational insight, and leadership abilities will offer much-needed direction to the Nigeria Police Force during this pivotal period, with a focus on accountability and reforms within the force.

In line with the provisions of the Police Act of 2020, President Tinubu is expected to summon the Nigeria Police Council soon to formally consider Disu's appointment as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. Subsequently, his nomination will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.

Reaffirming his administration's commitment, the President expressed a strong resolve to bolster national security, enhance the institutional capacity, and ensure the Nigeria Police Force remains professional and equipped to fulfill its constitutional duties.
