Renowned actor and comedian, Bovi Ugboma, has expressed his discontent with the Super Eagles players, attributing their recent performance to distractions caused by social media, following Nigeria's elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Morocco.

The remarks were made on Thursday, a day after Nigeria suffered a 4-2 defeat on penalties to the host nation Morocco during their semifinal match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

In an Instagram post that garnered attention, Bovi articulated that the excessive praise and comments online have adversely influenced players’ mindsets during significant tournaments.

He stated, “Social media has a detrimental effect on you guys, not only in this tournament but in previous ones as well. You get distracted by the praise. Remember, it’s not you they appreciate; it’s what you accomplish. Don’t be deceived by comments or likes; the situation can shift at any moment.”

Bovi urged players to refrain from engaging on social media while fulfilling their national responsibilities and pointed to how leading football nations maintain focus during tournaments.

He pointed out, “When Argentina faced us, none of their players were active on social media. Meanwhile, we were busy posting all sorts of content. Avoid social media during competitions.”

Beyond social media distractions, the comedian emphasized the importance of grasping the emotional significance of representing Nigeria, stating that football is the strongest unifying force in the country.

He remarked, “If anything brings Nigeria together, it’s football. Trust me, it’s football,” adding, “Religion helps prevent chaos in this country as we are deeply religious people. Politics often divides us due to self-interest. But football unites Muslims and Christians, North, South-East, and West alike.”

Bovi also addressed players like winger Samuel Chukwueze, who failed to capitalize on critical opportunities, underlining the importance of accountability on the field.

He commented, “You need to approach your role with the seriousness of an assassin. I’ve never witnessed an assassin hesitate when given a chance to strike while casually chewing gum,” further noting, “Chukwueze, I genuinely forgive you, but you must realize the weight of the nation rests on your shoulders.”

The comedian subsequently warned against prioritizing personal achievements over team success.

He stated, “If you seek glory before victory, more often than not, you’ll end up failing. You risk becoming the scapegoat; don’t reignite old habits. We squandered the advantage we had.”

Concluding his remarks, Bovi delivered a poignant call for commitment to the national team, despite the prevailing issues surrounding football administration.

He concluded with a strong message: “To the Super Eagles and aspiring Super Eagles players, always keep this in mind when representing Nigeria: regardless of how the NFF deals with you, if you choose to play for Nigeria, know that you possess the potential and power to unify this nation.” He cautioned, “So if you’re not prepared to give your all, don’t step onto the field.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria last claimed the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2013, and since then have faced challenges in pivotal stages of the tournament, often facing criticism regarding their focus, mentality, and commitment.
