Two British men vacationing in Benidorm, Spain, are facing serious repercussions after they allegedly staged a fake kidnapping to prolong their holiday and financially exploit relatives back home.
The two individuals, aged 37 and 51, are said to have sent a concerning video to their families. In the clip, one man is depicted threatening his friend, who appeared to be bloodied and injured, with a knife while demanding a ransom of £725. He warned that the friend would be harmed if the ransom was not settled.
Spanish authorities responded immediately, deploying hostage negotiators and initiating a significant operation at the hotel where the men were staying. However, as law enforcement was getting ready to storm the location, they observed the supposed victim calmly exiting the hotel alongside his alleged captor, seemingly chatting in a friendly manner, as reported by a police representative.
The response from law enforcement was extensive. "All police resources available in Benidorm were mobilized to ensure the victim's safety given the apparent seriousness of the situation," stated a spokesperson from the Alicante police. They further mentioned the involvement of a specialized police unit from Madrid experienced in dealing with kidnappings and extortion.
Investigators quickly deduced that the entire situation had been fabricated. "It soon became clear that the kidnapping was staged to secure quick financial gain, leading to the arrest of both men on charges related to simulating a crime and committing fraud," the spokesperson elaborated.
The case escalated for the duo upon the discovery that the alleged kidnapper had checked into the hotel using a false identity and mirrored this deceit when interacting with police. Consequently, he was informed of his rights concerning the additional charge of identity fraud.
The two men now face the prospect of facing prison time and could also be liable for a significant compensation claim due to the considerable police resources that were engaged in response to what authorities label as a contrived and fraudulent situation.
