The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, arrived in Dakar, Senegal, on Wednesday, April 8, amidst significant controversy concerning the organization's decision to annul Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.

Motsepe had previously stated his intention to visit both Senegal and Morocco. The purpose of these visits is to promote unity and collaboration within African football, following considerable backlash over CAF's recent verdict.

During his trip, Motsepe is expected to hold a meeting with Senegal's President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, at the presidential palace. A press conference is anticipated to follow this engagement. The visit occurs at a critical juncture, particularly after CAF reversed Senegal's 1-0 triumph over Morocco in the AFCON final, which took place on January 18 in Rabat.

The basis for CAF's decision, which resulted in awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory on March 17, was cited as a violation of competition rules concerning players leaving the field of play. The incident in question happened in the closing moments of the match when Senegalese players, accompanied by head coach Pape Thiaw and his staff, walked off the pitch. This action followed the awarding of a penalty to Morocco in stoppage time, a penalty that was subsequently missed by Brahim Diaz.

The Senegalese Football Federation has formally lodged an appeal against CAF's ruling with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The decision has provoked a strong response from Senegal, including a call from its government for an international inquiry into alleged corruption within CAF.

In response to the developing situation, Motsepe affirmed that he would abide by any decision made by CAS. He also noted that his personal opinions on the matter were not relevant to the proceedings.
