Ten-man Barcelona suffered a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening.
Despite controlling possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Barcelona was undone by Atletico's defensive resilience and a crucial red card. Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth found the back of the net, giving Diego Simeone's side a valuable lead heading into the return fixture.
Both teams started the match with intensity. Alvarez tested the Barcelona goalkeeper early on, but the home side soon settled into their rhythm, dominating the remainder of the first half. However, they were unable to convert their chances, with Marcus Rashford, Joao Cancelo, and Robert Lewandowski all missing opportunities.
The turning point in the game came when Barcelona's Pau Cubarsi was sent off for denying Giuliano Simeone a clear goal-scoring chance as the last defender. Julian Alvarez capitalized on the resulting free-kick, curling the ball into the top corner to give Atletico a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Barcelona pressed for an equalizer even with a man down, and Rashford came close with a free-kick that struck the crossbar, but Atletico's defence held firm.
Atletico extended their lead in the 70th minute through substitute Alexander Sorloth, who finished first-time from Matteo Ruggeri's pass. The visitors managed to hold on to their two-goal advantage, extending their unbeaten run against Barcelona in UCL knockout stages and securing their first victory at Camp Nou in two decades.
In another Champions League fixture, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Liverpool 2-0 at home, with goals from Desire Doue and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, giving them a strong advantage before the second leg at Anfield.
