A gas and petrol filling station exploded on Edibe Edibe Street in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, resulting in numerous injuries among residents and significant property destruction.

The blast, which occurred early on Saturday, completely demolished the structure known as Fonex Gas Station.

The ensuing fire spread across major parts of the facility, including its fuel and gas storage areas, also damaging parked vehicles on the site.

Located in a heavily populated area, the explosion impacted surrounding shops and buildings, compelling both residents and shopkeepers to evacuate for their safety.

Many of the injured individuals were treated at nearby patent medicine stores, while others were transported to hospitals for advanced care.

As of the report, emergency responders had not yet arrived on the scene, which created an opportunity for criminals to break into affected shops and loot items from the damaged gas station.

Crowds gathered at the location, and some individuals attempted to control the fire with sand, water, and other local resources.

Witness accounts regarding the cause of the explosion differed. Some locals speculated it was triggered by a customer using a phone near the gas dispensing zone.

In contrast, mechanic Ekpenyong Sam, who works across from the station, suggested that an electrical fault or outdated equipment might have been to blame.

"I suspect it could be an electrical issue or maybe some of the equipment in the station had expired," he explained.

The incident also led to emotional distress, with parents seen crying and desperately searching for their children amidst the chaos.

ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the state's Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene. He further stated that efforts were being made to call in fire service personnel, including assistance from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), to manage the situation.

Further developments are anticipated as emergency teams gain control of the affected area.
