Eric Chelle, the Head Coach of the Super Eagles, has openly articulated his lofty ambitions, expressing that his ultimate objective is not just to achieve success in Africa with Nigeria but also to elevate the nation to the pinnacle of world football. His statements come amid ongoing speculation about his future, particularly links to European clubs following discussions about a $130,000 contract renewal.

Chelle’s remarks arrive at a pivotal juncture for the Super Eagles, characterized by a resurgence in their attacking prowess, a revitalized team identity, and the harsh realities of football's narrow margins. Under his guidance, Nigeria has rediscovered its offensive strength, yet their aspirations have been thwarted twice in recent competitions due to penalty shootouts in Morocco.

During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria showcased its attacking capabilities, emerging as the tournament's most dynamic side. However, their thrilling campaign came to an abrupt halt in Rabat, where they were narrowly defeated on penalties by the host nation, Morocco, in the semifinals—despite dominating stretches of play throughout the tournament.

The sting of that disappointment was still palpable when Nigeria's ambitions for a return to the FIFA World Cup were similarly derailed just two months prior. Another shootout loss, this time to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rabat, brought their aspirations to a standstill once more.

In the wake of AFCON, rumors about Chelle's future intensified. Reports of European interest, alongside mention of a substantial contract renewal, have raised concerns that the Malian coach might depart Nigeria. In response, Chelle has decisively addressed both his aspirations and the musings surrounding connections to Olympique de Marseille.

In an interview on the 'Histoires de Foot Podcast', Chelle was forthright about his goals while also dismissing claims of active negotiations with Marseille.

“I want to win an Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria. Had we progressed further, my aim was to qualify for the World Cup and to win that as well,” he stated.

Chelle, who is 48, expressed that he has many dreams left to fulfill. He clarified that speculation regarding Marseille arose from signing with a new sports agency, emphasizing that this did not involve direct engagement with the club.

“I had no contact with the executives at Olympique de Marseille,” he clarified, adding that his agents simply explored opportunities with various clubs, including Marseille, during their coaching search.

While acknowledging the emotional weight of potentially coaching Marseille due to his history as a fan, Chelle reinforced that sentiment never turned into action.

“I never initiated communication about this. The rumors grew out of social media and gained traction in Nigeria. My agency was merely doing its job; beyond that, the narrative is beyond my control,” he stated.

Currently, Chelle's priority is firmly on Nigeria. With a year remaining on his contract and an option for the Nigeria Football Federation to extend until 2027, his timeline aligns with upcoming AFCON activities and the lengthy road to World Cup qualification.

Chelle maintains that the setbacks experienced have sharpened his focus rather than diminished it. The Super Eagles are regaining their attacking flair, bolstered by renewed confidence. The next goal is turning this promise into tangible achievements.

For Eric Chelle, the message remains clear: the dream is alive, ambitious, and remains intricately linked to Nigeria.
