The Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has sentenced 38-year-old Anwanga Effiong Udofia to death for the murder of a nine-year-old boy, Aniekan Idongesit Edet, who was a pupil at Lutheran Primary School in Itoko, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.

The tragic event occurred on December 6, 2016, in Nung Oku Akpasima village as the young student was making his way to school.

Court documentation reveals that the accused, Udo, a resident of Itoko Village, pursued the victim wielding two machetes, overpowering him and delivering fatal blows.

A friend of the victim, who was in primary four, recounted the events leading up to the tragic killing during the trial.

Court sentenced Anwanga Effiong Udofia to death for the murder of a nine-year-old boy.

"On that morning, we were heading to school when I spotted Anwanga. I often saw him smoking Indian hemp while holding two machetes—one in his hand and the other tucked into his trousers. He began chasing Aniekan, who fled into the bushes opposite the school. I am unsure what transpired after that as none of the teachers had arrived yet," he explained.

The next day, children looking for firewood stumbled upon the lifeless body of Aniekan, who was still dressed in his school uniform. He was found in a pool of blood with one hand severed and a deep gash on his neck indicative of a machete attack.

Udo faced charges of murder under Section 326(1) of the Criminal Code in the Laws of Akwa Ibom State.

During the proceedings, the prosecution presented four witnesses and introduced five pieces of evidence to strengthen their case.

The accused also took the stand to defend himself.

In his ruling, Hon. Justice Archibong Archibong proclaimed that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

"Thus, I find the defendant guilty as charged and hereby convict him. The sentence of this court is that you be hanged by the neck until dead. May God have mercy on your soul," declared Justice Archibong.

This judgment brings closure to a case that has haunted the Itoko community for almost a decade, underscoring the tragic loss of a young life and the quest for justice in Akwa Ibom State.
