Raheem Sterling has been urged by former Netherlands international Rene van der Gijp to think about exiting football altogether, reflecting on his disappointing performances at Feyenoord.

Having joined Feyenoord following a mutual agreement to leave Chelsea in January, Sterling has found it challenging to make his mark in the Eredivisie, contributing only one assist in five matches.

On the Willem & Wessel podcast, Van der Gijp expressed: "He ought to go to Robin van Persie and suggest stopping this venture. It’s clear this isn’t beneficial for him, for you, or for the club. He’s not aiding anyone like this. He should just head to Ibiza, don swimming trunks, and enjoy some delicious paella with his wife. That would be a splendid time for him. This situation isn’t going to work out anymore. What a pity."

Sterling's most recent appearance was against Ajax, where he was substituted after 55 minutes as Feyenoord battled for an equalizer in a match that ended 1-1.

Another Dutch football figure, Willem van Hanegem, shared a similar sentiment, stating: "He wasn’t present again. If I were in their shoes, I would request my money back and say: just go home. A player like that shouldn't be put through this. He used to be a good player… but that’s the extent of it." Despite the backlash, coach Van Persie has communicated his intentions to offer Sterling additional time to regain his form.

He stated: "The key focus now is winning matches while Raheem becomes fitter. I see him making progress, but at the same time, I want to witness more influence off the ball and on the ball."

Since the conclusion of the 2022 World Cup, Sterling has not participated in any matches for England and is currently tied to a short-term contract with Feyenoord until the season's end.
