Chidinma Unigwe, who speaks for the Goodluckans Movement 2027, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the 2027 presidential election. Unigwe stated that Jonathan's leadership style and his dedication to democracy are precisely what Nigeria needs at this critical juncture.
In a recent interview with ARISE NEWS, Unigwe explained that the Goodluckans Movement is a civic advocacy group, primarily driven by Nigerians residing abroad, but also including citizens within the country. The movement's formation stems from profound concerns regarding Nigeria's current trajectory, prompting their active involvement in national discussions about leadership and governance.
Unigwe articulated that many Nigerians living overseas have witnessed functional governance systems in their adopted countries. "As Nigerians in the diaspora, many of us have observed the advantages of effective governance," she noted. She further elaborated on her personal experience, stating, "I am employed by a provincial government, and I have seen the positive impact on citizens when institutions operate efficiently, leaders are held accountable, and public trust is upheld."
The movement's core belief, according to Unigwe, is that Nigerians are deserving of a government that prioritizes its citizens and offers equitable opportunities for all, irrespective of their background. "We are convinced that Nigeria requires a government that genuinely prioritizes its populace and a nation where every citizen has an equal chance to flourish," she asserted. She continued, "Consequently, our objective is to foster good governance, encourage peaceful civic participation, and promote informed national discourse, especially at this time when Nigerians feel alienated from their leaders and are uncertain about what the future holds."
It was within this context, Unigwe explained, that the Goodluckans Movement felt compelled to issue a public appeal to former President Jonathan to participate in the 2027 presidential race. "Therefore, utilizing this platform, we are formally requesting former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to contend for the 2027 presidential election, as we are confident his leadership attributes are highly pertinent to Nigeria's present challenges. We extend an invitation to all Nigerians, both domestically and internationally, to join our movement."
Unigwe characterized Jonathan as a leader who upholds respect for democratic structures and national unity. "We firmly believe his leadership embodies values that are indispensable for Nigeria at this moment," she stated. She further elaborated, "Dr. Jonathan exemplifies respect for democratic institutions, national unity, and a measured approach to wielding power. These qualities have become even more crucial amidst economic hardships, social unrest, and a prevailing decline in trust towards leadership."
Highlighting achievements during Jonathan's administration, Unigwe mentioned advancements in education, such as the establishment of Almajiri schools, and significant progress in agricultural reforms and telecommunications infrastructure. She also pointed to improvements in the power sector and electoral reforms. "In a single term, Nigeria emerged as Africa's leading economy," she added.
Crucially, Unigwe emphasized Jonathan's decision to gracefully concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election, describing it as a pivotal moment in Nigeria's democratic history.
When questioned about the movement's contact with the former president, Unigwe clarified, "We have not yet reached out to him. We are leveraging this platform, as concerned Nigerians, to formally request him, not merely urge him. There are Nigerians who prioritize the nation above all else. We recognize what his leadership signifies and are convinced that Nigeria needs his leadership currently. Therefore, Dr. Goodluck Ebele-Jonathan, if you are listening, the Goodluckans implore and officially request you to contest the 2027 presidential election, as Nigeria requires you. We desire your participation in the movement and urge you to place Nigeria first."
Unigwe expressed the movement's conviction that Jonathan's experience and his demonstrated commitment to democratic norms position him as a unifying figure capable of guiding Nigeria. "As Nigerians and members of the Goodluckans, we hold the view that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, given his background and his voluntary relinquishing of power in accordance with democratic principles, is the leader Nigeria needs now," she stated. "We see him as a unifying force. We are confident that if he managed the situation effectively then, he possesses the capacity to return and revitalize the economy and set us on the right path, especially considering the current political instability."
Regarding the issue of insecurity, Unigwe acknowledged the significant challenges faced during Jonathan's tenure but contended that the situation has deteriorated since. "One reason for the decline is that, while I believe Dr. Goodluck Jonathan implemented measures to address insecurity during his time in office, the current discourse has shifted. It is now being framed as an issue affecting only Christians, which is incorrect. We are all Nigerians, irrespective of our religious beliefs or tribal affiliations. As Nigerians and Goodluckans, we maintain that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, based on his experience and his willingness to uphold democratic tenets, is the leader Nigeria requires at this moment. He is a unifying figure."
Addressing inquiries about political party alignment, Unigwe stated that the movement does not intend to dictate Jonathan's party choice. "Presently, we have no influence over Dr. Goodluck Jonathan's decisions. However, we trust his political acumen to identify the most suitable party to guide Nigeria effectively. Our sole request at this juncture is for him to contest. We believe that once he decides to run, he will select the appropriate party. Furthermore, we are confident in his ability to unite Nigerians, mitigate social tensions, and foster equal opportunities for all."
Unigwe also commented on comparisons with other political figures, including Peter Obi. "The reason we are advocating for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan's candidacy is our firm belief that his leadership approach is what Nigeria requires at this time. A few years ago, when Dr. Peter Obi ran, the nation sought efficiency and accountability. Dr. Peter Obi embodied those principles and was the right candidate then. Currently, the nation faces significant division, social unrest, and a lack of trust in the government. We need a leader who can steer Nigeria back on course. This is a primary reason behind the Goodluckans' formation; we have concluded that it is time for all Nigerians to prioritize Nigeria first. This includes Dr. Peter Obi. I am confident that this movement will be beneficial, as we are all striving for the common good."
Unigwe concluded by reiterating the movement's central message: "The Goodluckans were established because we have concluded that it is imperative for all Nigerians to prioritize our nation above all else. This sentiment includes Dr. Peter Obi. Therefore, I believe this platform will be instrumental, and we are all working towards the same positive outcome."
