D’Tigress Honored with Houses and National Awards

African champions D’Tigress have formally received the housing documents and national honors that were promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after their victory at the 2025 Afrobasket in Côte d’Ivoire.

The presentation occurred in Lyon, France, at the venue of the FIBA Women's World Cup Qualifying Tournament, facilitated by the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, alongside the Director-General, Bukola Olopade.

During the event, both players and officials were awarded certificates for national honors, in addition to the title documents for houses allocated to them in Abuja by the Federal Government.

Shehu Dikko affirmed that this gesture highlights the current administration's dedication to rewarding excellence and swiftly fulfilling commitments made to Nigerian athletes.

He noted that unlike previous administrations where such promises often lagged, the current government has shown a readiness to honor its obligations promptly.

“I thank Mr. President for restoring confidence in Nigerian sports and demonstrating that sports can positively impact lives and livelihoods,” Dikko remarked.

He emphasized that the President values the team for consistently showcasing Nigeria on the global stage through dedication, pride, and resilience.

Furthermore, Dikko assured the team that the promised monetary rewards from the President are in the final stages and will soon be credited to their accounts.

Bukola Olopade stated that Tinubu's initiatives are reshaping sports development in Nigeria to align with global standards, ensuring that athletes receive appropriate rewards.

He described the prompt delivery of this promise as a testament to the administration's focus on the welfare of sports and athletes.

Olopade remarked that the President's reward system continues to motivate Nigerian athletes to achieve remarkable results for the country.

Musa Kida, President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, expressed gratitude to Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of athletes, establishing a lasting legacy for Nigerian sports.

The head coach of the team, Rena Wakama, conveyed her appreciation to the President for his support, assuring Nigerians that the team would persist in making the nation proud.

Team captain Amy Okonkwo also extended her thanks to the President on behalf of her teammates, affirming their unwavering dedication to the nation's success. (NAN)
