Dwight Howard, a distinguished figure in the world of basketball and an NBA Hall of Famer, has confirmed his retirement from the sport. This decision comes in the wake of personal challenges, particularly surrounding his divorce proceedings.
The 40-year-old former star, recognized for his jersey number 12, shared his retirement news on social media through an extensive post where he expressed a desire to focus on his personal life shortly after filing for divorce from Amber Rose Howard.
In his message, Howard reflected on his journey, stating, "I woke up today on the 12th of this month, and I figured it’s time to move on from Superman! I’m no superhuman… I cry! I struggle! I feel like everyone else. Through the lies, the media, and the hate I still show love and Smile Through The Storm."
He elaborated further, saying, “But now I'm taking off the cape and retiring from all basketball to pour into my family and give back to communities worldwide. I know some of you might think I thought he already 'retired' but I didn’t… the game retired me! I still had more left to give! Yeah, I did play professionally for 20 years, and I'm grateful to be able to say that, but I can’t lie; seeing these other players still going at it at age 40 inspired me to want to keep trying, but now I believe my duty will be to pass it down to the next generation.”
After 18 seasons in the NBA, Howard was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025. He was the first overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, embarking on a notable career primarily with the Orlando Magic over eight seasons.
Howard had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Lakers before playing for the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, and Washington Wizards. His return to Los Angeles in 2019 culminated in securing his first NBA championship with the Lakers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following his time in the NBA, Howard played one season in Taiwan, marking the end of his professional playing career.
In the recent past, the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year has faced personal turmoil involving his wife of just 14 months. Police were summoned to his home in Suwanee, Georgia, three times over consecutive days from March 5 to March 7 due to reports of a suicide threat, a domestic dispute, and a theft.
Shortly after Howard filed for divorce on March 9, Amber Rose, a rapper known as Amy Luciani, initiated her own divorce proceedings. This was not her first attempt at divorce, as she had previously filed last summer before the couple reconciled.
