The Edo State Government has taken decisive action by ordering the arrest and prosecution of all students from the Igbinedion Education Centre who were seen in a viral video engaging in bullying and assault of another student.
Kassim Afegbua, the state Commissioner for Information, disclosed this information during an interview on Channels Television on March 16. He explained that after viewing the disturbing footage that displayed students allegedly bullying a fellow student, the government felt compelled to act immediately.
This incident has sparked significant concern among parents and concerned citizens regarding the level of discipline maintained in schools and the overall behavior of students.
"It is quite concerning. Upon hearing about the situation and watching the videos, we were puzzled about what could lead to such behavior. There is no justification for treating someone that way. It is completely unacceptable," he remarked.
Afegbua confirmed that the government responded swiftly by expelling the students involved and has instructed the police to ensure those responsible are arrested and face legal consequences.
"We took prompt action that resulted in the expulsion of the students involved. However, expulsion alone isn't sufficient; we also directed the police to ensure the students are arrested and held accountable under the law. This morning, I contacted the Commissioner of Police to verify that actions were being taken. He informed me that he expects parents to present the involved students, and following an investigation, charges will be filed in court," he stated.
The alarming video depicted two male students physically assaulting another student lying on the ground. One of the aggressors was shown dragging the victim by his suit and stomping on his chest while the victim cried out in pain, as a third student recorded the event and pleaded for them to stop.
