A tragic incident has resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy, Musa Audu Idrisa, who was accidentally shot by an eight-year-old neighbour in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, Borno State.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday, March 17, 2026, at around 5:30 p.m. while the children were playing inside the house.

As reported by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the shooter, identified as Abubakar Inusa, had accessed a loaded Dane gun that was improperly stored and left unsecured by his father, 45-year-old Inusa Mohammed, who is a member of the Nigerian Hunters Group.

The injured boy was rushed to the State Specialists Hospital Maiduguri but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Following the incident, authorities released the victim's body to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions.

The police confirmed the recovery of the firearm involved and mentioned that an investigation is underway to address the negligence of the parent responsible for the weapon's security.

Additionally, security personnel indicated that a comprehensive inquiry by the State Criminal Investigation Department is ongoing to prevent such occurrences in the future and to ensure accountability.
