An eight-year-old girl, identified as Siyama Idris, passed away after falling onto an exposed iron rod at a construction site, where road and drainage work is currently taking place in the Tudun Wada quarters of Nassarawa Local Government Area, Kano State.
The accident happened on Saturday near the Tudun Wada Primary School, which is situated close to the site of the ongoing construction.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the girl was sent to a nearby store to pick up supplies for Ramadan iftar. In an effort to cross the drainage area, she attempted to walk over a makeshift wooden plank bridge.
“She slipped and fell directly onto an uncovered iron rod that was part of the drainage framework. It pierced through her stomach, leading to her instant death,” remarked Aminu Adamu, a local resident.
Another eyewitness, Balarabe Isah, mentioned that for an extended period, residents have been using the plank bridge due to the lack of a designated pedestrian crossing.
He characterized the construction area as hazardous, citing the presence of exposed metal and open drainage channels that pose risks to pedestrians on a daily basis.
Community members have condemned the inadequate safety measures at the construction site, urging local authorities to implement stricter safety protocols to avert similar incidents in the future.
