Ekiti State Launches 'Operation Comb the Bush' to Tackle Rising Insecurity

Security operatives in Ekiti State have commenced a new joint initiative, dubbed “Operation Comb the Bush,” aimed at bolstering safety and curbing criminal activities throughout the state. This action follows recent security incidents reported in adjacent states such as Kwara, Kogi, and Ondo.

The comprehensive operation, launched on Monday, involves a collaborative effort from various security bodies including the armed forces, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), State Security Service (SSS), and the Amotekun Corps.

During a briefing at the Police Headquarters in Ado Ekiti, the Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State Command, Falade Adegoroye, explained that the operation was deemed essential due to intelligence suggesting increased criminal activities in neighboring states and northern Nigeria. This heightened pressure on criminal groups in these areas could lead them to seek refuge in the Southwest, posing a direct threat to Ekiti.

Commissioner Adegoroye described the operation as a preventive strategy to protect lives and property. It will feature coordinated bush combing, clearing of criminal hideouts, visible policing, and targeted raids in vulnerable areas, especially those near the state's borders. The initiative aims to thwart crimes like kidnapping, cattle rustling, vandalism, and attacks on public facilities and places of worship.

He further emphasized that the operation would help create a secure environment for farmers as the rainy season begins, ensuring they can carry out their activities without fear of criminal elements in forests and rural settlements.

The police commissioner urged the participating officers to conduct themselves with discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights, assuring residents that the operation would be managed responsibly and in accordance with international standards.

He acknowledged and praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his commitment to security, consistent support, and provision of necessary resources for security agencies to operate effectively, which significantly aids in combating crime and safeguarding the state.

In his address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, retired Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, characterized the operation as a forward-thinking measure by the governor to maintain peace and security. He highlighted that this initiative demonstrates the governor's foresight in preempting and addressing potential threats, particularly in light of recent events in surrounding states.

Mr. Ogundana stated that the government continues to invest in intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation, and logistical support for security formations. He affirmed that this operation is a crucial component of a broader strategy to ensure that Ekiti remains inhospitable to criminal elements.

He reassured the public that the Oyebanji administration remains dedicated to ensuring Ekiti is safe, secure, and conducive for economic activities and harmonious living. He also urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies by providing them with credible information.
